@ghost_letters @gjmwoods bubble: relatively well educated, white collar jobs. Me personally: Dad was shift worker at Glanzstoff / Enka / Akzo until he died early, Mom worker at German Post. Basically one generation into higher education and end of 1990 without ties to it, it was hard even to Gymnasium let alone into studies without any family help or help from Arbeitsamt. That struggle is and was real.
