@mbonsma@mastodon.social very well put. I’ve often had people say “but disabled people!” which: a) portrays all disabled people as incapable of independent travel, effectively throwing them in the scrap heap. b) Ignores those disabled people who benefit from quieter streets with less noise, easier cycling and better driving for those who need to.

@mbonsma@mastodon.social You've slipped a decimal point: Canada has 31 million people over age 15, so 85% of that would be 26.5 million licensed drivers. I'd recommend rhetoric from the documentary, "Radiant City", filmed in Calgary, but about all North America. The great line is that every mortgage in the 'burbs should come with a red-ink, all-caps warning above the bottom signature: EVERY ADULT IN THIS HOUSE WILL NEED THEIR OWN CAR.

@mbonsma@mastodon.social if you make cars necessary you make it way harder for society to take cars away from people who misuse them too - making everyone unsafe

@mbonsma@mastodon.social I'd suggest using age 12 as the cutoff, since that's a reasonable age for kids to go out on their own. Relegating those kids to lousy public transit makes their lives worse, and encourages them to take up driving. I spent hours wandering around #halifax before i turned fifteen because the bus system sucked.
