You can decide what you want to outsource and what you want to do yourself. Personally, I find a lot of joy in heating my house with firewood in the winter. We still use electric heaters in the bedrooms, but our main living area is heated with a wood stove. It's a choice that I make. No one forced me to do it, and I could choose to use the oil furnace if I wanted. But I have the resources and know-how to be self-sufficient.
