@cassana It delights me that something so old is still so easy to suggest meanings for. They are mysterious, sure, but not mysterious in the same way as those weird roman dodecahedron things, say, where we know they were reasonably common but have absolutely no idea what they were for, or if they were even for anything. Instead, they seem as if they could have been made yesterday, and any number of plausible explanations spring to mind, because people are still making similar things. To me, they're of a piece with things like Anthony Gormley's work, Henry Moore's figures or folk art stuff like peg dolls. Even without knowing the specific meanings palaeolithic peoples attributed to these figures, their existence (and the fact that i have an emotional reaction to them) tells me that I have at least something in common with those people from millennia ago. I find that comforting.

  • @pdcawley Wonderfully put! And I agree wholeheartedly. I find such artefacts, though arguably Löwenmensch (Lion-man) is my all-time favourite, very inspiring, and very human.
