I personally favour these social interpretations due to their wider intercultural utility, yet I also don't want to step into the "one interpretation fits all" trap, so these figurines may have had secondary functions as, e.g., prosperity or good luck charms (similar to many Lucky Coin traditions across the world nowadays) or status symbols gifted to and worn by mothers who survived child-bearing, and perhaps a wider heirloom tradition from mother to mother. • But… The fact that we should never lose sight of is “we really don't kno.” I personally find that amazingly exciting. These, and other palaeolithic artefacts, can put us in touch with our shared humanity, glimpses of a past when life was no doubt difficult, but when people still made time to engage in artistic pursuits, be this making carvings and cave paintings, or making and playing flutes and rattles.
