And sure, that interpretation may not be entirely wrong, but calling them Venus figurines is a misnomer. It's not even close to a "Goldilocks" comparison, or rather, we can try to make it one, but we have nothing but interpretation, sometimes cleverly based on correlation, like the more curvier figurines seem linked to colder periods. The researchers posited that the figurines could've served as ideological reminders about what increases a woman's survival chances in such climates. (4/12)

  • However… Depicting the ideal body proportions associated with higher survival chances is all well and good, but knowing the ideal does not help achieve it. And why would they need a reminder of how to survive? That's a quite problematic assumption. It also skips another aspect of survival, namely being able to outrun or defend oneself against other predators, who in colder periods of scarcity will be more opportunistic. (5/12)
