Digital sovereignty: The battle between US big business and EU big business – and why opposition is just fine
A short 🧵
Manoeuvring the debate around digital sovereignty is such a minefield because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend” just does not hold at all. The lobbying battle in Brussels is intensifying right now because a lot of money for European cloud is on the table. But I fear most of it will further entrench problems - every though in different ways.

The Business Software Alliance (with Microsoft, OpenAI and IBM among its members) just published a survey supposedly showing that “Europeans evaluate tech services for quality, price, and security – not headquarter location”: https://techpost.bsa.org/2026/04/22/bsa-survey-europeans-value-openness-security-and-quality-in-choosing-tech-services/ The design is poor and contains wild assumptions like “Assuming that all tech providers follow EU rules”, obviously failing to acknowledge that the US govt is using the entrenched position of US tech to demand a relaxation of these rules 2/x
