@Merovius Absolutely right and even leading up to the nukes in Japan, there were months of fire-bombing Japanese cities, killing between 2-6 times as many people as the nukes themselves, and Japan's leadership would just continue the war like nothing happened. In this light, the nukes could be considered desperate measures to make the Japanese government stop the war quickly, instead of drawing it out longer - killing more.
