@keirFox In addition to other ideas that have been mentioned, one thought from experience - are you using any sort of automatic cloud backup software? I once had an issue with my cloud sync software nuking files (which then the software dutifully synced the then changed file up to the cloud corrupting the cloud backup too). Worth checking if you do.

@baralheia Thankfully no -- I had a similar experience back when I was on OS X and kept both an Time Machine backup on a disk as well as my files sync'd to the cloud. This combination is incredibly hazardous if you have a large number of files and one day when US East 2 decided to go offline everything got confused and I nearly lost all my data in all three places. Not doing that again. Or, at least, not with something I can't directly control.
