@hazelnot i think we truly can have better than what is expected of the modern internet. much of the hardware such as wiring isn't terribly specialized because the internet protocol is so complex it's very difficult to perform in hardware so is implemented in software by the operating system. this is an advantage for a successor network which is essentially on the same level as the internet until we get to the level of ethernet/coaxial/radio in which there is more fun innovation at hand for us.

@hazelnot i personally think laser comms are very interesting but they're of course unidirectional. anyway louis pouzin whose work was essentially stolen by the americans for ARPANET advocated for the term "catenet" for "concatenated" and where crossing network boundaries becomes an explicit process instead of completely opaque to the user as occurs now (which contributes to network unreliability)
