@howtophil Reminds me of my "Arithmator" (I forget the exact spelling, it's currently in storage) that I got from my grandfather. It's basically a "more compact abacus" using slides with holes in them instead of separate beads. (And it even has convenient "hooks" at the top and bottom so you can slide the stylus into the next column for carry)
If I ever manage to get my mitts on a set of watchmaker's machine tooling, I'm seriously tempted to scratch-build a replica Curta...
