@joeldn Oh yeah. I was meaning to share my bash script somewhere with all the GDAL commands. Will do so soon.
This GDAL raster approach would never be as easy as a leaflet MarkerClusters plugin sadly.
I didn't rant about it much but in my talk, but it is a frustration I have, that marker clusters are over-used. For example I look at a tutorial like this https://asmaloney.com/2015/06/code/clustering-markers-on-leaflet-maps/ and I tend to prefer the first map with a shed load of markers!

@harry_wood the leaflet cluster markers plugin is so easy to use, the rendering so speedy, and the animations so satisfying that i guess it gets used gratuitously almost everywhere people are making maps - I'm certainly guilty of overusing it! Still, I agree that a shed load of markers is much more instructive (once they've loaded) than some floaty numbers.
