@mpe @mike Oh, I agree! But the DOCX of pandoc is pretty decent, and it avoids having another, specialized editor that authors have to familiarize themselves with. So “we accept DOCX submissions adhering to this template, and we discard all formatting except what’s pre-defined” is in my experience a viable compromise.

@felwert @mpe @mike Another argument for DOCX-based editing (although not necessarily with Microsoft software) is the absolutely abhorrent state of markdown editors for collaborative editing and commenting. Humanists are used to have multiple marginalia, glosses, comment streams, and built-in granular version control, which are nigh impossible to replicate in a markdown environment.
