@mike @felwert JATS: a standard designed to be so complex, almost as though its purpose was to exclude publishers who could not afford to produce it and to understand its complexity, while always shouting that "if you don't do JATS, you're not a serious publisher"

@mpe @mike OTOH, at least it’s a standard, in contrast to Markdown. So I guess my approach would be using Markdown during the editorial process, converting from/to docx for everything author-facing, and serializing the pandoc AST to a subset of JATS for archival purposes. (Although the JTEI schema would also nicely fit that purpose, just less “serious publisher” signalling.)
