I don't know how much compositing is done on top of these renders at Disney. But "down here" us regular Joes would maybe track a patch from an old render onto the background and tweak some colors in post in order to not do a time-consuming re-render. So getting an old shot to work with updated renders where people might change their position in frame would increase the required effort way beyond simply updating the animation.
