Fun fact, LDAP isn't Microsoft's, its circa 1993: its a simplified version DAP (X.500) of the ITU.X series of standards... Same one that gave us 'internet' certificates (X.509)... The core of AD AuthN/Z is MIT's Kerberos (also 1993) which also predates AD.
Many 'MS standards' come from somewhere else...
