As a follow up, it looks like the solution to the audio (and possibly camera problem) was simple to fix: `sudo apt remove pulseaudio`. This will remove pulseaudio and install pipewire.
EDIT: It also looks like the bottom mic is disabled unless you select "Earpiece" as the output, and headphones don't seem to work in the Oneplus 6.

This weekend I am going to try daily driving with the Oneplus 6 with @mobian . I can tolerate no camera and I will see how calls go over the weekend.
