this is such a good analysis The second level is about attacking the idea of solidarity and connection: Because “AI” will not replace you (again, “AI” cannot replace the absolute majority of workers!) “but someone using AI will”. This sets up kind of a Thunderdome in which we all have to fight against each other for scraps/jobs. This framing implies that you should not unionize and connect with your fellow workers but that you should see them as your enemies, as the people who will take your job and your ability to provide for your family. We know this dynamic, it’s exactly how the right presents migration as “attack”. It also normalizes violence again turning all of existence into an endless fight against one another (unless you are one of the few people in power of course).

@hipsterelectron I wonder if we'd be where we are today with the current state of and attitude towards LLM if it hadn't been popularized by the VC tech bros, and instead spun out of ethical open source collaboration. In particular, I'm looking to how China is regulating AI, (copyright is a different thing there), and the attitudes towards the tech. It's not perfect and there's still a ton of slop, but it's labeled, and the government's mandate is societal stability, which means labour and human livelihoods aren't threatened by this technology. It's like the perfect storm of shit and people who bought into the shit here.

That has been a fascinating conversation among archivists that sometimes comes up on my radar. I too thought it was super exciting to archive "all the worlds knowledge". It did not occur to me that was a cultural bias. Not all knowledge should be archived, it invoked a lot of cognitive dissonance in my brain!
