Well, I'm glad I got fed up with buying sponges years ago and switched to homemade crochet 100% cotton dishcloths.

Crochet seems to hold up better than knit even with the same yarn. Use a smaller hook than you normally would for that weight of yarn.
I use solid colors for the kitchen and multi colored yarns for the shower. You can do squares for the kitchen and circles for the bathroom. Whatever works for you.
Ideal starter project for learning crochet. It doesn't matter if it's a bit wonky, you're using it to scrub the beans off a plate, not hanging it up for display.
