@onpaperwings @tphinney Thank you both. It's true that I'm mostly exposed to new font families on github, which is a different demographic than "most font families".

@behdad @onpaperwings @tphinney I think a lot of this is cost: a variable font is sold for the family price, which it is the whole family, but that $ can scare away customers. This is a thorny one!

@behdad @onpaperwings Also, I agree with @onpaperwings that many (I suspect most!) type designers do their design using variable font tech under the hood. I have literally always worked that way, from the mid-90s to the present. The only exception is a typeface that has only an upright and an italic, and was ill-suited to having a range of weights.
