@compost_funeral @joyfulcarla Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is like a speed run through every imaginable nasty ism ever conceived. It's so mean-spirited.

  • @AdrianRiskin @joyfulcarla Yeah, I think Dahl was on to something with his willingness to let genuine nastiness into childrens' stories, however there are many kinds of it which he was clearly taking the wrong side on, in ways that were not excusable at any point. I adored his writing around ages 6-7, at one point I declared I would not read any other author, and I'm pretty sure it's because this sense of genuinely fucked up stuff going on was more relatable than most stuff aimed at children. The Trunchbull feels real as a terrifying authority villain when you're six, and it's super engaging, then you grow up and go "hmm, why was such a big deal made of how she used to be a hammer thrower"
