#TIL The Carnot cycle was formulated in 1824 by Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot and established the theoretical upper limit for the efficiency of any heat engine. This means that it has been a fact for two centuries that electric motors are superior to internal combustion engines.* Even an optimized internal combustion engine would have an efficiency of only 60%. In reality under ideal conditions, it is around 40%. An electric motor, on the other hand, achieves a realistic 60%-90%. #climatechange

    * It's even more interesting that the first electric and internal combustion engines weren't developed until later.
