I think that quantum factoring does have some value. Not in the sense of being a particularly useful application, but rather in the sense of a useful benchmark that is hard to fake.
Of course, people still try to fake it because it's much easier to fake your way into Nature and Science compared to doing the real thing. To this day, nobody has performed any factorization using Shor's algorithm on a real device: https://fediscience.org/@hweimer/114855882006260378
But the amount of shortcuts taken are pretty transparent, so it's still a useful benchmark.
