@gdc Crikey! Now you're asking! I think I recall the high, middle, low zone info from some textbook I read about Postscript. I'll get back to you if I remember or rediscover it!

@lowtech @gdc That’s not a thing in current font formats for general typography. You may be remembering one of any number of online discussions about banded/bubble kerning, dating back to at least the comp.fonts Usenet group in the mid-1990s. The closest thing to an implementation of this at the font data level would be cut-in kerning for OpenType math typesetting. cf. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/cleartype/pdfs/cambriamath.pdf
