@unknownuniverse @thelinuxEXP If this was about making full-scale desktop software like Office or Photoshop for Windows 11 vs Qt apps for the KDE that Steam uses for their Steam Deck, then my answer would be a confident ”no!”. However, games are often extremely portable, with only Direct X being a bad, proprietary citizen. Switching to only supporting Metal and Vulkan would give us Windows, Linux and Mac-native games, 100 % bypassing the critical Windows dependency.

@Arcticulate @thelinuxEXP Vulkan isn’t a silver bullet. F1 could use it tomorrow and we would still hit the 'Anti-Cheat Wall'. Porting kernel-level DRM to Linux is a massive hurdle big devs like EA won’t jump if Proton 'fudges' it for free. As a Linux-first user who only keeps a Windows partition for the F1 series, I worry we’re just trading one dependency for another.

@unknownuniverse @thelinuxEXP I’m not a game dev in Unity, nor Unreal engine, but games are usually made in C++ and C#. Just think how many game platforms game devs need to support: PS5, XBOX, Win 11 and sometimes Android + iOS. They can do it because the code compiles on multiple OSes without rewriting the whole game. Native Linux support isn’t rocket science, but their boardroom investors demand market share. I’m confident your F1 one day will be on Linux natively.
