@momo so i suspect the way to do this is with variants as you have figured out. the addendum to that is that you have two "fill" patterns you can use as well. (edit fill patterns with shift+auto-fill on, select pattern one or two with rotary), then assign fill 1 or 2 (or scatter) as the "auto fill" (hold auto-fill on, and step 14,15,16 light up flashing green, selected is steady) and you can copy a variation to one of the fill slots. then that will drop any time you hit "manual trig"(fill). afaik the difference with that vs doing the same with variations is you can trigger a fill pattern partway thru the steps, where a variation which would only trigger at the start of each 16
