@ripper @th @ErinRose Is there some kind of contact that needs to be closed in that top connector for the bottom two to work?

@frank yeah the longer ground pin pushes on a plastic piece that opens the cover in front of the live and neutral

@frank @ripper @th @ErinRose UK sockets have a little plastic (normally closed) shutter over the live/neutral holes: the only way to open them is by pushing the end of a lever inside the earth/ground hole at the top (which is why, on UK plugs, the earth pin is slightly longer than the other two: it's also at a different orientation to help reduce accidental unpluggings and attempts to use the plug the wrong way round)
