@nosfe I think it's the only way to go to try and find more out. I am sure you can find someone at a local college to help out.
An SEM would probably help a lot but good luck finding one of those lying about.
I have no expertise in photographic films but my first thought was "oh what pretty crystal growth"... 😁

@SamanthaJaneSmith I think crystallization process of silver halides on the color layer is one possibility which has caused this.
