@ognik I blame the public schools. No, really - "read these three chapters by next week and then write an essay about it" does such a great job framing reading as an unpleasant chore, and then it nails that frame down hard with unhappy associations. Nobody's gonna believe that reading is fun when they're also being forced to do it.
