My understanding is that in traditional form, a tanka was often written by two different people, one writing a haiku and the other replying with an additional pair of lines, shifting the perspective usually, perhaps in another voice. So I wrote the original haiku and was thinking about it a bit, and then I decided it should be extended and that I would reply in kind of the same way.
