software rots pretty fast actually… it’s not like fresh fruit, but more like a can of food with a Best Before date.

or the software is techinically fine, but the can opener has blunted over the years or has been replaced with a different fitting.

@hbons The can analogy is better than the fruit one because the decay is invisible until you open it. Most teams don’t find out their software has expired until a dependency breaks or a new hire tries to set up the dev environment and can’t.

@hbons Well yes, I wouldn't argue with the general sentiment, but that actually depends on the software and the time frame. Live service products certainly have a limited lifespan. On the other hand I can still use software from the 80's.
