@marisa If he's totally into Nirvana, then one of the Fender Squier jaguars or mustang guitars would be perfect along with a Boss Katana 50 amp. Probably in the range of about $500 or $600 for the guitar and amp. If you have a Guitar Center outlet in your area, they probably have payment plans, rent-to-own, you could rent stuff just to try it for awhile etc. You can usually return things to Guitar Center no questions asked for 30 days too.

@marisa A couple more amp possibilities are the Positive Grid Spark Mini or Spark 2.
