Their statement is probably incorrect. This says that 39% of India's population is "vegetarian" (with the definition left to the respondent): https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/07/08/eight-in-ten-indians-limit-meat-in-their-diets-and-four-in-ten-consider-themselves-vegetarian/ I see claims that 9% of the population is vegan, but can't find the source of that figure (on brief examination).
