@KatyElphinstone 6/ It can be difficult for teachers to provide support for autistic children because they're under time pressure, particularly with cuts to SEND. They can end up firefighting problems and not have time to devote to help the child who is not acting up. We have a friend with an autistic son who manages to cope with school, but has an emotional outburst when he gets home. He cannot cope with sudden changes that he has not been prepared for and she cannot understand why they do this

    @KatyElphinstone 7/ It seems obvious to her that this could be prevented by teachers telling the pupil in advance of upcoming changes " miss Smith will not be in tomorrow, so you will have another member of staff ". This is what I mean about lack of training teachers to deal with autistic children; never spring something unexpected on them, try to understand the way they experience the world and remember that they can be overwhelmed, as can we all! We all need space and quiet to recover.
