@KatyElphinstone 3/ I have some more thoughts. Schools seem to find it difficult to work with autistic children, and there seems to be a lack of training for teachers in this area. For example our grandson found going into the canteen difficult. My wife found that it was the smells that was the problem and giving him a scented lip balm to rub on his upper lip was the solution that worked. Listening and analysing the problem was all that was needed, but staff were too time stretched

@KatyElphinstone 4/ While autism diagnosis can be vital to gain access to psychiatric counselling and services in schools, labelling someone can lead to "othering", particularly when stress and trauma lead to other diagnosis like PTSD or similar acronym. I have had someone comment that every counselling session seems to add another possible acronym, but little practical help to deal with stress in everyday life. Understanding and empathy from the counsellor make a huge difference.
