@mpe extraordinary conclusion that since 90% of the cost is borne by applicants, the onus is on applicants to reduce the costs.

@neuralreckoning yes - I don't agree with that at all. Grant culture is a blight on academia and it's what academics have been forced into doing. Hardly their fault. Selection process needs reform.
