@Anneke FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD etc. Some Unix like operating systems, I think mac OS is technically a BSD too. I don't know how it differs from Linux and whether it is worth having a look because it does things substantially different (eg I think jails sounded interesting, a way to isolate processes).
