To clarify "other people's screens might be showing disturbing stuff": I've told them to not just unthinkingly look at other people's screens because their friend or classmate might be trying to scare or shock them (and being a child themselves not understand what harm that can cause). Most kids at their school have a smartphone.

ultimately, I think you can't really have 100% control over what your kids see... there will be friends' homes and screens... but keeping an open channel of communication and showing an interest in what they are doing, letting them tell you about what they've done with their screen-time, sitting down with them and non-judgementally let them show and tell you about all the things they like, will most likely make them feel like they can tell you if something goes wrong... or is weird...
