I am thinking of self-hosting some stuff right now, but that’s mainy OneDrive/Google Drive replacement and Google Photos replacement. I could maybe self-host Bitwarden, too. Email? Nope. I know there’s A LOT of work with that, with the domains (so my emails don’t get rejected by other parties), with spam filters and so on. I will leave that to the professionals, it’s too important. File storage is for me, but email is for communication with others. So congratulations if you got that working :)

  • I went the self-hosting route too. I use seafile for files, immich for photos, vaultwarden for passwords, baikal for calendars and contacts, and freshrss for news. I could’ve consolidated most of it in a nextcloud instance, but I’m more attracted to the UNIX philosophy. Regarding email, I’m using my own domain on Proton with simple login setup as a catchall to automatically create aliases. I went through all the accounts in my password manager and changed all emails to unique identifiable aliases, or straight up deleted anything I don’t see myself using anymore. For de-googling, the hardest part after changing all email addresses on services (no redirect) was to switch “login with google” accounts back to classic accounts with credentials to either delete or switch them to a SL alias. Convenience really is how they get and keep you. I had to do the same with Apple and Microsoft too, and I’m not using these “login with…” buttons anymore. One important lesson that you’ve learned as well is don’t put all your eggs in the same basket. Ask yourself what would happen to you tomorrow if a service you use (like Proton) revoked your account. For me, as I’ve set up catchall’s with my own domain, I could still set it up with another provider and not lose access to these. That’s also why I actively don’t treat their drive and calendar solutions as anything more than another offsite backup. Resilience is key.

I took a similar path as you, but everything basically happened in the span of less than one month. I used to have two mail inboxes, my personal gmail address and my student address. I wanted to degoogle my setup, so I decided to switch to Proton Mail. I already had Proton Pass and Proton VPN (I started these subscriptions just a week before), so I decided to do the Proton Unlimited 2-year plan. I liked both Proton Mail and Pass. I forwarded all my mails from my two other inboxes to my Proton address, and in the Proton mail client i sorted everything with folders and labels. Proton Pass was the biggest QOL improvement I had. I used to use the basic iCloud password manager, which sucks. You can only add login credentials and the firefox extension never worked. But after 20 days I decided to cancel the subscription and get a refund. I had just bought a minipc, which since then I use as a self-hosting server. I still need to setup a Drive alternative, but I already self-host Immich (Google Photos replacement) and Vaultwarden (password manager). I haven’t tackled email self-hosting (as you and the other user said already, it’s a big commitment), so I use Migadu as my email hosting provider for my domain. It’s very cheap (I got a 50% student discount too), but they are some daily limits, even though I never reached them. They’re also very transparent about the pros and cons of their service which is nice :) The only proton service I still use is the VPN, since it has port forwarding. I had to change my SL aliases to my domain aliases, but atleast it wasn’t that time consuming since I had proton unlimited for just a few weeks.
