Scientific journals will either become a very big part of the disinformation chaos that will afflict our societies, or they can be one of the islands of little disinformation, but to do so they will have to adopt data chain-of-custody tools to avoid "deepfake data".

One limited approach is to time-stamp one's data files and other progress as the project develops (check out "Trusted timestamping" on Wikipedia), but I think all that does is make perpetrating the fraud require effort over a long period of time.
