@helianthropy You might enjoy reading about the career of Ronald McNair. The second black astronaut into space, first to play music while in space (on a saxaphone he wrangled to get on board), scientist, karate black belt... the list goes on. Fought like a tiger to be there. Sadly, he ended in the last Challenger mission. The crew were a fascinating mix. A recent book on the mission simply called "Challenger" builds a captivating history of crew selection from the earliest days of NASA.
