@eniko my dm has a fun thing with stuff like persuasion rolls, where yes, the scores are decisive. But he also gives every NPC some 'buttons' that are sometimes more important if we press them.
eg a major moment in our first campaign, my bard inevitably rolled super high persuasion. But his description of the response made it clear that the reason it succeeded was I'd explicitly appealed to his demonstrated character: evil, sure, but above all loyal, and despises treachery
