Were I prime minister there would be rules about this kind of thing.
A charge applied at the time of bricking, based on the number of devices in existence, a disposal fee if you will. Avoidable by open sourcing the firmware and providing unlocking instructions usable by non technical folk, verified by gov funded engineers (paid to be picky as heck) and hosted on a gov.uk domain.
(And it applies to any device bricked from now forward)

@emily_s@mastodon.me.uk @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk I suspect we are going to see more of this over the next few months before the October introduction of the Cyber Resilience Act. As I understand from October companies have to monitor and notify users of known exploits as well as providing a date for how long they are going to provide updates. Unintended consequences being companies kill old devices before October so they don't have to deal with this on old platforms that don't/can't comply with legislation.
