@lienrag The more I think about Sirat, the more the kid’s death feels like the whole point of the film. It’s not just tragedy, it’s a warning about the stupidity and arrogance of the entire trip. These white Europeans are stumbling through the Global South like it’s their personal playground for self-discovery, partying, and chaos, with zero consciousness about the political reality around them. The whole “saving her” mission is bullshit too. She didn’t need saving. She’s an adult, and the film tells us that pretty clearly. So when they start taking reckless routes through a literal minefield, it feels like the movie is underlining its argument with a sledgehammer: white northern entitlement doesn’t protect you from reality. Hubris gets people killed. As a dad, the second he told the kid to go to the car, I knew. My immediate thought was: no, stay close to the hill, don’t move. And then the film goes exactly where it has been heading all along. Just fucking devastating.
