@dhobern @KorimakoEcology That scenario would certainly be worrying. I see it mostly applying to areas, or taxa, where there are very few other observers active. Otherwise, the bot will still appear as an outlier, and some interested observers will inevitably check up on the plausible but fake records. I can't see it working for plants, since it's easy for someone to verify a plant sighting. Plausible but falsified observations of a rarer moth would be harder to catch as fraudulent.

  • @joncounts @dhobern I think it's less likely that someone would do it to achieve a financial benefit, I think someone would do it just because they could. Like all the fraudulent voting with the Bird of the Year competition. No one benefits from that, its just messing with something for the sake of it.
