This is not to say what is happening now is the same, but rather that it is an expansion. Black and brown folks have been dealing with this violence for generations. White folks smarter than I have fought against it as well. It took me until 2020 to truly realize the extend of the violence wrought against what people in power consider the "margins" of society. I will not waste energy on shame or guilt for taking so long, though it humbles me that it took until then. But there's work to do.

If you (like me) have people in your circles that have yet to face reality, it's your job (and mine) to keep their attention on those who can't speak for themselves. To stand up and fight alongside our neighbors. I can't be out in the streets every day, but I can be in my social circles pressing and holding power to account. We have to find a way that does this without burning every relationship, for that serves nobody. But we still need to figure out how to make it impossible to ignore reality.
