I recall playing it at Cambridge gaming museum, along with a Virtual Boy, and whilst ET was definitely a little frustrating in places, I didn't hate it.
I can understand why people would have been disappointed by it.

@ishambard @sunie VirtualBoy is another one that always comes to my mind. I hope having it on NSO elevates it; that system had a much stronger library than people give it credit for.
