Love that review. I joined Apple around the same time, maybe a year or two earlier (I could look it up, but I can't be arsed), and I remember distinctly the transition from Spindler to Amelio, and the meeting at DeAnza when he announced the umpteen billion dollar hole that had to be filled: 'We can do this once.' The layoffs that followed were fun, as I, too, had just landed in California, but the layoff angel passed over me and hit another guy, and I continued on for another several years. Managed to have a face-to-face with Steve at a whiteboard, which made my boss want to crawl out the door.
All my code was in system software or printer drivers, and so had nothing like the longevity of PCalc, and probably very little of it exists any longer (although Print Centre is still called Print Centre!).
Halcyon days, indeed. I do miss them.

@mtconleyuk I was kept well away from Steve :) I was late 96 to early 2000, so the fun times for sure!
