- go into global options
- select writing aids
- check the "libhyphen hypenator"
- select the language you're using and also check it there
then, and only then, the warning disappears and hyphenation is working

I could go on for a while, but have to continue writing. Yet im continuously amazed by the many many little (unexplained and undocumented) awful design decisions of #LibreOffice. Whats also maddening: whenever I have to look something up, the answer to questions that are voiced because of this awful UX is quite often coupled with a "you're using it wrong", which is just so messed up given the state of UX in LibreOffice menus/dialogues/settings...
