Here's an example of what I meant by "don't trust individual-heroic self-chosen avatars of technology to make solutions for everyone either." They can be great, nice people like this person sounds like, and it's still untenable. You can't simply slot someone else in to doing the 40 hours/week maintenance of this stuff on their own and have it be somehow an anarchist communal project. https://blogs.gnome.org/chergert/2026/02/06/mid-life-transitions/

@richpuchalsky (Not that it takes away your main point (maybe it adds to it?), but Clipper Chip won and the '90s Crypto Wars got crypto not-considered-munitions. Also the Nym Wars was... definitely more ambiguous, I think I'd argue that it's still being fought, and credit that ongoing non-loss to the people who fought.) What components of the web (the internet as a whole?) as a platform/experience/social-capacity are you thinking particularly about, as capacities to focus on ensuring available in freedom? One thing I'm keeping an eye on is NNTP.
